Brits should consider using winter snow tyres on UK roads as well as when travelling in European ski locations

Winter tyres are the smart way to ensure a car’s safety on the snowy roads of the UK and Europe this winter, advises award-winning car hire website Carrentals.co.uk. The comparator is advising Brits to think ahead with a cold winter predicted this year.

Last year the heavy, early snow in the UK led many drivers to buy and fit snow tyres on their cars – which caused many big name providers such as Kwik Fit to run out of stocks.

Carrentals.co.uk regularly warns Brits heading away on ski holidays to book snow chains and winter tyres before they travel to be sure of getting what they need for their trips. With the prospect of a snowy UK winter looming however the website warns Brits to consider winter tyres on Britain’s roads too.

The vast majority of car hire providers do not carry winter tyres or snow chains as standard items and consider them to be extras – but travellers to ski resorts still often leave it until they arrive to ask about them.

Gareth Robinson, Managing Director of Carrentals.co.uk, says: “The matter of when is the right time to add winter snow tyres to a car is a tricky one – there’s no hard and fast rule about adding them to a car which must be adhered to but they are still highly recommended in snowy, icy weather.”

“People renting a car overseas for a ski trip should be smart and plan ahead – book a ‘snow pack’ which includes winter tyres, snow chains and more, to be sure you avoid missing out.”

Auto Windscreens Advises Motorists: Prepare For The Cold Snap

With reports of a possible return of La Niña, a climate phenomenon which is linked to extreme weather events, Auto Windscreens is advising all UK motorists to prepare for an expected cold snap. According to Auto Windscreens’ Innovation and Training Manager, Chris Bonsall, following simple advice through the winter months could save money and avoid costly repairs. Chris has worked in the industry for nearly 40 years and advises where drivers park their cars can have a bearing on whether they are affected by ice and snow.

Chris advises: “Whenever possible, always park your vehicle in a garage overnight, next to a building or even between other cars to give it some protection from the elements. If your vehicle is covered in snow, remove it all, not just from your windscreen, as built-up snow on roofs and bonnets can slide off and obstruct your view.”

The correct care of glass in vehicles can save time in the longer term and prevent damage. Chris adds: “Clean glass, lights and mirrors regularly as grit and salt can make them dirty very quickly. Ideally, when leaving your car, protect glass with a special removable cover, but if you do need to remove ice, never pour boiling water on it, which could cause it to crack or explode.”

Chris’ list of winter ‘must-have’ equipment is simple and inexpensive – de-icer and an ice scraper: “Use a good quality de-icer – have two cans handy in case you run out – and a proper ice-scraper – as CD cases and other makeshift scrapers can scratch. Clear all glass and mirrors of frost and snow – never make ‘portholes’. Ensure side windows are free of frost at the edges of the felt or rubber runners to prevent damage to the opening mechanism.”

Chris believes all motorists should give their vehicles regular winter ‘health checks’ in cold weather: “Check your wiper blades for wear and don’t pull them off an icy windscreen, as the rubber on the blade will tear. Ensure you top up with anti-freeze screen wash daily and don’t be tempted to use washing-up liquid in place of anti-freeze, particularly in cold weather. And finally – check your windscreen for damage – if you see any chips or cracks get specialist advice on windscreen chip repair as soon as possible from Auto Windscreens.”

The Co-Operative Offers Young Drivers A Way To Cut The Cost Of Driving

The average cost of getting onto the road for the first time is now £4,459, according to new research by The Co-operative Insurance.

This includes the total cost of driving lessons, road tax, driving tests and insurance, in addition to buying a first car.

According to data, the average 18-year old owns a Vauxhall Corsa worth £1,450 and will have to pay more than £2,000 for insurance alone. They will also have 20 driving lessons at a cost of £480, sit two driving tests to the tune of £62 each, plus will fork out £111 on a provisional licence, theory test and road tax.

The average cost of becoming a motorist, according to The Co-operative Insurance Item Cost*
First car £1,450
Insurance £2,294
Provisional licence £50
Driving lessons £480
Driving test(s) £124
Theory test £31
Road tax £30

However, despite the high costs of getting on the road, the research also shows today’s new motorists buy their first car younger than ever, with the average person now owning their first set of wheels at just 18 years old, which is four years before their parents’ generation did at age 22.**

And while more than three quarters of those aged over 45 (77%) bought their first car themselves, the same can’t be said for their offspring, with the majority (53%) of 17 to 25 year olds now relying on their parents or relatives to cough up the cash.

Grant Mitchell, Head of Motor Insurance at The Co-operative Insurance, said: “Our research shows that although today’s young drivers own their first car from an earlier age than their parent’s generation, the cost of actually getting on the road is huge.

“Of course, not many 18 year olds have thousands of pounds in savings, so increasingly they are relying on the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ to pay for the initial cost of driving.

“Unfortunately, the biggest challenge is the cost of car insurance which has risen at a disproportionate rate for young drivers because they are involved in more accidents on the roads.”

The research also revealed that the cost of insurance is one of the main reasons why people don’t buy a car, with 30% citing it as the reason they remain without their own set of wheels.

The survey of 3000 road users was carried out to mark the launch of The Co-operative Insurance’s Facebook page, which is offering young drivers the chance to win a year’s free ‘Young Driver’ insurance.

The Co-operative Insurance has a specific Young Driver product, aimed at helping drivers between the age of 17 and 24 to reduce their insurance premiums through responsible driving. While The Co-operative Magazine offers safe driving tips, and moneysaving tips for teens to help with budgeting and for those thinking of buying a new car.

On-The-Ball Staff Usher In Next Decade

Around 150 employees of The Funding Corporation in Chester marked their company’s tenth birthday in October with a glittering Venetian masked ball at a top city hotel.

The car finance group, based on Chester Business Park, said it wanted to offer the most memorable “thank you” possible to staff who have helped built its success.

They included employees of the firm’s retail division, ACF Car Finance Limited, which operates used car showrooms across the UK.

Chester’s Crowne Plaza hotel was the venue for the celebrations which included a four-course Italian banquet with wines, and night-long live music and entertainment.

Adding extra elegance to the event were colourful Venetian eye-masks provided to guests as they arrived for Italian-inspired cocktails at the start of the evening.

In a welcoming address to guests, Managing Director of The Funding Corporation David Challinor said that team work was the underlying factor of the company’s success.

In the last ten years, he said, The Funding Corporation has loaned almost a billion pounds to private individuals, many of whom had previously been refused credit by banks and other high street lenders.

Mr Challinor thanked staff for their exceptional standards of service, which is especially valued by the customers, as evidenced by surveys which found that over 96 percent would recommend the company to others.

Earlier in 2011, The Funding Corporation was named Britain’s Most Responsible Lender in a finance industry business award scheme.

Consumers get the latest tips to avoid paying too much for a rental car next summer at the London Olympics

Despite a start date of 10 months in the future, many savvy travellers planning to enjoy the 2012 London Olympics are already lining up their hotel rooms, tickets and rental cars. This is a wise move says leading online car hire rate comparator Carrentals.co.uk, which points out that the massive influx of demand will almost certainly result in high rental rates during the games.

Gareth Robinson, Managing Director of Carrentals.co.uk, comments: “Few events attract so much global attention as the summer Olympics, so we are expecting a bumper tourist season in London next year. Every business wants to capitalise on this chance by raising their prices, and this includes car hire firms. There are still plenty of good deals on car hire available right now, but if you wait until the 11 th hour you’ll have to pay dearly for it.”

Right on the heels of the 2012 London Olympics, which run from 27 July through 12 August, are the popular Paralympic Games from 29 August until 9 September. With nearly two months of solid sporting action London will be buzzing with activity and visitors for most of the summer.

Robinson continues: “The most popular car rental extras like sat nav and child safety seats will probably sell out weeks in advance. The same holds true for the most popular models of rental car. But if you’ve already finalised your travel itinerary for London there’s no reason to put off booking a rental car. The Olympics may be 10 months away but it’s perfectly fine to make a car hire reservation now, saving you the potential headache of high prices and a weak vehicle selection.”

Carrentals.co.uk is the leading car rental comparison site for comparing deals from up to 50 rental companies, including Alamo, Auto Europe, Budget, Holiday Autos and Sixt, in over 15,000 locations worldwide including car hire throughout the UK and USA.
