When you’re building a tourer or planning a campsite in your head, solar panels should always be a consideration – they are a source of free, limitless power after all – but how do you know what panel to choose!?

There are two main considerations to make when choosing a solar panel – how much power you use and how much space you have to pack your panel/s.
First, to calculate your requirements, consider how many 12 volt accessories you use at camp.
Generally all electrical products will have a wattage listed (check for a sticker near the power cord) you can use this wattage to calculate the real-time amps the product will use while it’s on. Some products may also list an Amp/Hour rating which simply gives an average on the total amount of amps used per hour the product is turned on. For example, the Adventure Kings 60L fridge/freezer is rated to use less than 1 amp/hour when the interior is set at 5°C and the outside temperature is 32°C.
So let’s work through an example:
You arrive at camp at 6pm on Friday, and it’s 32°C – your fridge is down to temperature at 5°C thanks to being plugged in while you drive and you’re ready for an icy cold beverage while you light the campfire, roll out your swag and set up the awning. Then you set up an Illuminator Strip Light and as the sun sets you turn it on and wind it down for ambient light.
As the temperature drops into the night your fridge will use less power, but every time you open it for a bevvy it has to work to cool back down again, so we’ll assume the fridge is using the rated 0.83Amp/Hours all night and into the morning. 6pm to 8am the fridge has used around 12 amp hours. The Illuminator strip light was on for 5 hours total and uses 0.4A at its low level for a total of 2A
So between 6pm and 8am you used 14 Amps total – whether you have a 98AH or 115AH deep cycle battery you’ve still got plenty of juice.
But throughout the next day your fridge will continue to use power. Between 8am Saturday and 8am Sunday it will use another 24 Amps. Add another 5 hours of strip light use for 2Amps and add in a phone charge using a cig socket USB adapter rated at 12W – that’s another Amp per hour your phone is on charge. In this case your phone is charged in 2 hours so that’s another 2Amps. Plus you use your Thumper to inflate some inner tubes to relax and float in the river – you use your Thumper for 15 minutes. To calculate the amps used per hour, you find the instantaneous power listed on the sticker (45Amps) and because you’ve used it for a quarter of an hour, calculate one quarter of 45. For this example we’ll call it 12Amp/Hours.
So Saturday to Sunday morning 8am you’ve used 40Amp/Hours – combine this with the Friday night total 14Amps and you’re looking at 54Amp/Hours – at this point your Deep cycle battery has used over 55% capacity if you’ve got the 98AH battery, and over 46% capacity if you’re using a 115AH battery.
You’re planning to leave camp at 4pm so the fridge still needs to be powered by your battery for a further eight hours. That’s another 8Amp/Hours, bringing the total weekend use up to 62Amp/Hours. 63% of your 98AH battery and 53% of your 115AH battery – you should definitely add a solar panel to keep those batteries charged!
Now you can look at the output of the different solar panels available.

The table below shows their maximum charging amperage (assuming the same PWM regulator for all panels) as well as the estimated total Amp/Hours after 6,8 and 10 hours of sun light.
So even six hours of sunlight on the Saturday and Sunday and your battery will have recharged at least 72A/H with a 110W Fixed Solar Panel (with added PWM regulator.) This would cover your power usage and keep your batteries charged. Of course, this is only a guide and your actual consumption may vary depending on many factors including, but not limited to, the outside temperature, fridge temperature, battery condition, wiring size and condition, solar panel angle and position etc etc.
The second consideration is the amount of space you have in your vehicle – for smaller vehicles, a 120W portable Solar blanket is perfect as it packs down to a compact size and still packs a punch.
For permanent mounting solar panels, the choice is obvious – a 110W fixed solar panel (or two!) These feature a thicker aluminium frame and don’t come with a regulator so you can connect your own, use a DC to DC charger and even connect multiple.
For bigger vehicle where space is less of a priority a 160 or 250 watt folding solar panel is ideal. You can set these at varying angles to catch the sun, and they mean you can park in the shade and have your panel in the sun doing the hard work! They also provide plenty of power for bigger camp setups or hotter conditions where your fridge is working more to keep your drinks cool.

Scooter riders are reducing congestion times and making the world a better place. Ok that last part may be a bit of an exaggeration but the first part is true.
This is according to studies undertaken by researchers investigating the impact motorcycles and scooters have on congestion. Research Company Transport and Mobility, Leuven, wanted to measure the traffic flow as well as air quality on a stretch of busy road predominantly used by commuters and see how two wheels as opposed to four benefitted commuters and the environment alike.
The team placed sensors along the route and measured traffic flow every 5 minutes, mapping a typical rush hour pattern along the way and using the information as the benchmark for the study. Coupling analysis software with data obtained from the Federal Planning Bureau the team were able to simulate traffic flows whilst checking their simulation results against actual figures.
By adjusting the percentages of different types of vehicles i.e. cars vs. scooters during rush hour, some very interesting results were found.
A 10% shift from car to motorcycle resulted in a serious reduction in traffic queues that would see driving conditions return to ‘normal’ – proving that scooter riders were saving everyone time. The results showed that if just 1 in 10 drivers changed to two wheels the reduction in travel time would reach as much as 63%.
Perhaps more interesting is when the researchers found that a switch of 25% from cars to scooters/motorbikes would annihilate congestion completely.
Scooter riders rejoice! You’re doing everyone a favour by reducing congestion and that’s a fact!!
With regards to emissions, scooter and motorbike riders were doing their part for the environment by choosing two wheels as emissions costs were 21% lower than that of a car. Researchers also found that when 10% of the traffic was made up of scooters and motorbikes, emissions were reduced by 6% which came down to smoother traffic flow and greater average speeds.
In conclusion, when as little as 1 in 10 commuters switch to scooters or motorbikes from a car, everyone saves at least 60% in travel time and plays their part in helping the environment by reducing emissions by 6%. Couple that with the huge savings on fuel, insurance, parking and running costs, and people are set to save thousands of pounds per year.

DiMora’s production of the Vicci 6.2 Convertibles will have special editions of 25 Master Lee Sun-Don works on them. The original Great Treasure Gate paintings reflect Master Lee Sun-Don’s continuing fascination with the distinctive door knockers created during the Ming Dynasty that lasted from 1368 to 1644. They have chosen these door knockers as a unifying theme for DiMora’s limited run. The owner of each car receives the original painting used to create the image on the automobile. “Development Unbound” is the title of the artwork on DiMora’s first Vicci 6.2 shown at the A.R.T. fair.
DiMora created the Neoclassics division of DiMora Motorcar to blend 430-horsepower 21st Century technology with automotive design cues from the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1920s and 1930s. It then occurred to DiMora that the automobiles he was manufacturing with smooth curvature lines could be embraced by exquisite art. But it had to be the right match of artistic style for the combination to succeed. This would be uncharted territory, as never before in world automotive history had such an idea been tried.
“DiMora Neoclassics is carving a path to an entirely different, untapped market,” said DiMora. “Because of our trendsetting and out-of-the-box thinking, it only made sense to me to combine art with automobiles, to produce true rolling art.”
After many months of studying and comparing the work of numerous international artists, DiMora determined that Zen Master Lee Sun-Don was the right artist for the collaborative effort. Overcoming the language barrier, the two men quickly became friends with a common understanding of how to proceed. The DiMora Vicci 6.2 Emperor series of 25 masterpieces is the result.
After Lee Sun-Don creates the original painting, meticulous care is taken to copy the image onto the Vicci. The core selection of 14 colors of paint are blended to produce the 50 colors that serve as the extended color palette of the car. Every detail of the painting is hand copied precisely into the outlines marked on the car. There is also a 51st color, but it is not paint. Some gold elements of the painting are actually gold leaf on the hood and side panels, along with the wheel hub caps on the Vicci 6.2 Emperor.
Within the first hour of the opening of Art Revolution Taipei 2014, the first of the Viccis sold. Automotive glazing supplier Auto Windscreens has bagged its first deal in the retail sector with supermarket Morrisons.
Auto Windscreens successfully completed a three month trial for Morrisons in Kent and Glasgow, to check out processes, procedures and service at both ends of the country. It has now been named the sole glazing provider for the fleet of commercial vehicles delivering products from nine distribution centres to 480 stores around the UK. Auto Windscreens expects to undertake around 450 jobs annually on Morrisons’ vehicles, which, depending on the time of year, number between 650-750.

The pioneering SEAT Young Driver programme is proving to have a positive effect on accident rates among its participants. This is according to research into the subject by Young Driver Training Ltd, the company behind SEAT Young Driver.
A survey among teenagers that have taken the ground-breaking young driver course has revealed that their accident rate is markedly reduced when compared to the overall rate of newly qualified drivers in the UK.
Statistics from the Department for Transport show that two out of ten newly qualified drivers will crash within six months of passing the test*, and drivers aged 17-24 are involved in one in four incidents of serious injury or death on the road, despite accounting for one in eight full UK driving licences.**
By comparison, of those that responded to a Young Driver Survey and had held a full licence for six months or more, fewer than one in ten had been involved in an accident behind the wheel: 9%, which is less than half the national rate.***
Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) chief examiner, Peter Rodger said: “It’s good to see early indications that pre-driver courses are producing safer drivers. The IAM has always felt that training drivers over a longer period of time and catching them when their attitudes towards driving are still developing is key to producing a safer driver.
“Facilitating more time to develop skills of observation and anticipation, and to build a broad experience of different traffic conditions, will ultimately save lives.”
Kim Stanton, Marketing Director for Young Driver, added: “Our research, along with data from the Swedish Government, shows that training young people to drive at an early age when they’re much more receptive to road safety messages really could save hundreds of lives per year.”
SEAT Young Driver is the only driver training course of its type in the UK, offering anyone aged between 11- and 17 years old the chance to get behind the wheel with a qualified ADI instructor and learn how to drive.
Research undertaken for the Swedish Government found that establishing a minimum number of hours of pre-test driving experience slashed accidents among young drivers by 40%****. SEAT Young Driver was set up in 2009 based on this research, and remains the only course of its type in the UK.
By the end of 2012 over 60,000 young people will have taken the SEAT Young Driver course, each of them equipped to go into their driving lessons at 17 having learned the fundamentals of driving.
Lessons take place throughout the UK, from Southampton to Glasgow, at venues with facilities for driver training away from the public highway; locations have included The NEC in Birmingham, Brent Cross in London and Metro Centre, Gateshead.
The course includes the very basics of manoeuvring a car, to more complex, real-world skills like overtaking, using a roundabout and reverse parking.
SEAT has announced the introduction of a pink Mii, called the ‘Miinx’.
The Miinx is the work of Cornwall dealership Dales SEAT, and was created as a one-off show car after Sales Manager Tom Rawlings decided one evening that he fancied doing “something different.” Work began immediately, with the dealership choosing a Mii Sport in Deep Black metallic as the basis for the as-yet-unnamed car.
The Mii’s bodywork was covered in a pink gloss vinyl wrap, while the lights were tinted with a translucent film, resulting in a more pronounced, contrasting look.
Once the wrap had been applied, Dales posted a picture on Twitter and asked for some name ideas. ‘Miinky’, as it was for a while, generated plenty of discussion, though eventually the Miinx sobriquet was settled upon.
Aside from the wrap, the Miinx is a standard three-door Mii Sport. Power comes from a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine with 75 PS and it gets a generous standard equipment list including 15-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, leather steering wheel and gear knob, dark tinted rear windows, front fog lights, and sports suspension.
The Mii Miinx is a compact way of making a very big statement. It’s also charitable, with Dales planning to give £100 to the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity for every car sold.
“One thing’s for sure, the Miinx is a car that always provokes a strong reaction, good or bad,” said Tom Rawlings.
“We’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the response to the special edition since we launched it. From the day we first parked it outside our showroom, people have made a point of coming in to tell us what they think.
“The car’s also divided opinion on Twitter. I tweeted a photo and within minutes hundreds of people were commenting about it. But we couldn’t believe it when people from all over the place started calling the dealership to enquire about the car. We’ve obviously done something right,” he added.
Dales has received a raft of enquiries about the Miinx – one from as far afield as northern Scotland – and has consequently begun taking firm orders.
